Marketing a Convenience Fee

When a Government or Educational Institution decides to take advantage of the opportunity of a convenience fee, it is vital that the message for decision to use this fee is clearly communicated to the publics paying the fee. 

Implementing a Convenience Fee allows government and educational institutions to pass a fee along to the individual choosing to pay via a credit card, debit card, or eCheck.  To market this as an advantage to the cardholders who ultimately pay the fee, there are three things to keep in mind:
  1. Convenience Fee programs provide government and education institutions a way to avoid alternate methods to cover the increasing cost associated with acceptance of electronic payments, including, but not limited to, taxes, levies, increased tuition or tuition to cover these additional costs to the flat budgets.
  2. Convenience Fees are only assessed when an institution is offering an alternative to cash payments.  The Convenience Fee is therefore applied in order to allow for acceptance of electronic payments online.  This allows for payments from anywhere, anytime as a convenience to the payers.
  3. Security is an automatic focus for online payments. In addition, as a government and educational institution, there are special processes that are followed to set up the relationship with the networks, creating a secure relationship that includes a special routing procedure for all transactions specific to the registered institution.
